Message from the CEO

ASA’s CEO letter to members and friends

This past month I have been actively working with our staff and organizers on our Fall events and professional development programs.

Starting with the 2021 ASA International Conference – It was great to have our International Annual Conference as a hybrid event in Las Vegas this year, as it provided us the opportunity to come back in-person, which we all missed the last two years.  Our first offering of conference in a hybrid format was not perfect at first, but we learned a lot through the process in order provide a better experience for our future programs.

We started the conference with an inaugural golf event that we will definitely be continuing each year then amazing sessions. It was great to reconnect in-person with our members and those that were virtual also. Thank you to all of our sponsors and exhibitors, presenters, and attendees – great team effort by all ASA staff and volunteers.

In other conference news, I moderated the session “Valuing the valuers” with the esteem panelists David Crick, JoAnne Arruda, Jeremy Cox, Mike Dwyer and Syed Zaidi at the leading aircraft conference hosted by CJI in Miami, FL, where we continued to create the awareness of why everyone should use an appraiser especially ASA Appraisers. Participation in events like this, testifies to ASA’s commitment to this highly advanced and specialized asset class.

For information about the Society’s Aircraft Valuation Program, including upcoming classes, how to choose an aircraft appraiser and hiring a member expert, visit www.appraisers.org/aircraft.

I participated as a panelist on the topic of Appraisal Bias and Diversity at the annual conference of the Association of Appraiser Regulatory Official (AARO) where I engaged in some insightful conversation and dialogue. The more we can move the needle in helping everyone understand their unconscious biases they have the better off society will be.

In ASA news, we continue to issue reminders to consumers on the importance of hiring qualified appraisers. ASA released a three minute video posted online to the Society’s YouTube channel, highlighting our gems & jewelry discipline. The message features testimony from four members holding the Accredited Senior Appraiser designation, who explain how qualified gems & jewelry appraisers, like those accredited by ASA, provide exceptional valuation expertise, are among the best trained and most experienced in the profession and adhere to the highest standards and ethics.

If you haven’t registered yet, please note that registration is open for the 2021 ASA Fair Value Conference – Winter and early bird prices end November 15. The event will take place on December 1 from 11am – 5:15pm ET in a virtual format. The conference agenda has been posted to the website and we are looking forward to this year’s topics and speakers.
