Remembering ASA Life Member, Dr. Shannon P. Pratt

This past Saturday ASA life member, Dr. Shannon P. Pratt, passed away peacefully in his sleep at age 88.

Dr. Pratt was the foremost authority in the field of business valuation and a legendary author, teacher and presenter of the many concepts used today around the world.

He was formerly chairman and CEO of his own firm headquartered in Portland, Oregon where for more than 40 years he performed valuation engagements for mergers and acquisitions, employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs), fairness opinions, gift and estate taxes, incentive stock options, buy-sell agreements, corporate and partnership dissolutions, dissenting stockholder actions, damages, marital dissolutions, and many other business valuation purposes. He testified in a wide variety of federal and state courts across the country and frequently participated in arbitration and mediation proceedings. Additionally, he also founded and served as editor of Business Valuation Resources for ten years.

Dr. Pratt was a dedicated ASA member for more than four decades. Besides his designation in business valuation and life membership, he also held one in Appraisal Review & Management and was conferred the designation of Fellow (FASA) by his peers for contributions to ASA and the appraisal profession – the highest honor ASA bestows.

His final efforts to support ASA came in typical fashion, with a smile and words of encouragement recorded in a promotional video for the latest release of his Valuing a Business, 6th edition book.
