2018 ASA International Appraisers Conference Wrap-Up

The American Society of Appraisers recently held its annual International Appraisers Conference on October 7-10, 2018 in Anaheim, California at the Hilton Anaheim. In keeping the tradition of providing the highest-level of education for appraisal experts, this year’s IAC featured more than 40 sessions of the most comprehensive educational programming available taught by preeminent thought-leaders from all appraisal disciplines. IAC’18 kicked off Sunday night with a Welcome Reception, allowing attendees to get to know one another and network.

Monday was the first full day of the conference with introductions and welcoming remarks from Lee Hackett, ASA’s Interim Chief Executive Officer. Next, Robert B. Morrison, ASA’s International President, spoke and thanked the members of the joint conferences planning committees, including the following International Appraisers Conference discipline planning committee members: Bill Engel, ASA, Matt Kaufman, ASA, Analee McClellan, ASA and Bill Wilson, FASA.

Immediately after that was the keynote presentation by Valerie Oberle, President, The Oberle Group, who talked about the key factors for business success. Following the keynote presentation, attendees adjourned to the appropriate specialized educational track they chose.

The first educational sessions of the day included presentations on Pitfalls in Appraising Concrete Products Plants and Aggregate Processing by Leland E. Martin, ASA; The Appraisal Foundation and Personal Property Activities by David Bunton; Big Box Appraisals Without a Lease by Lawrence (Larry) J. Golicz, Ph.D., ASA, MAI; Getting More Business: Expert Placement Firms – The Good, the Bad, and the Manageable by Toby Edwards; Danger Will Robinson! Da Vinci Robots are Here to Stay! by Douglas R. Krieser, ASA, FRICS; The Science of Qualified Appraisals with Charitable Contributions by Dennis I. Leonard; and USPAP 2018-2019 Update and Future Issues by Jay E. Fishman, FASA, FRICS.

The annual membership meeting and International Awards Presentation followed these educational sessions. During the Awards Presentation, 2018-19 International President Bob Morrison recognized the following ASA members, volunteers, chapters and staff for their achievements.

ASA members Susan Golashovsky, FASA and Sandra J. Tropper, FASA were inducted into the College of Fellows. The Rising Stars Award was given to: Nicolas Ballian, Nicholas J. Janiga, ASA, Fawntel L. Romero, ASA, Timothy Roy, ASA, Megan Salehli, ASA and Shane Weber, ASA, IFA. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Barry Alperin, ASA and Noël Burndahl, ASA. ASA’s Examiner of the Year Award was given to Karen Milan, ASA. The Sylvia Wade Olson Award was awarded to Jennifer Aguilar. The Jerry F. Larkins Award recipient was Noël Burndahl, ASA

ASA’s Chapter Member of the Year Award was given to Sumeet Sahnan. The Chapter Education Event Award was designated for the Houston Chapter and the Outreach Program Award and the Chapter of the Year Award to the Chicago Chapter. The Appraiser of the Year Award was awarded to David Doering, ASA/IFA. The Real Property Educator of the Year Award and The Paul A. Wetzel Award were given to Mike Orman, ASA/IFAS.

Following the awards presentation, Morrison recognized the past presidents at the event: NAIFA past President Robert Luciani and ASA past President Sharon Desfor.

After lunch, sessions touched on topics of Fixed Asset Management – How Good is Your Fixed Asset Ledger by Michael Crismyre, ASA; PP/BV Team: When Joint Personal Property and Business Value Appraisals Are Needed by Joy Berus; Attacking & Defending While Staying Out of Trouble by Ted Whitmer, MAI, AI-GRS, CRE, CCIM; Aviation Roundtable – Current Market Trends and Insights from Industry Experts by David Crick, ASA, David L. Fisher, ASA, and Barbara A. Spoor, ASA; The Art of Credibility Before the IRS and US Tax Court by Nancy Escher, ASA, Dennis I. Leonard, and John Thomson, ASA, MAI; and Appraisal Reports and Expert Testimony for Property Tax Appeals by Chris Robinson, Jack Young, ASA (MTS-ARM), CPA, and Mike Evans, FASA.

The Educational Foundation Auction and President’s Networking Reception followed Monday’s educational classes in the evening. There was a silent auction, which was a huge success due to over 60 items being donated. The auction and President’s Networking Reception concluded the first full day of the conference.

Monday was busy with over 20 educational sessions from more than 30 industry experts.

A second keynote presentation was scheduled for Tuesday morning at 8:00am. Rod P. Burkert, CPA/ABV, CVA gave an insightful presentation on Is Your Practice Working for You?

Educational sessions began immediately after on: US Fish & Wildlife 101 for Appraisers – An Overview of Wildlife Laws in the US by Joe Ventura; Legal Issues and Pitfalls when Appraising Art and Antiquities by Michael Heumann; Going Concern Appraising for Real Estate Appraisers by L. The Women’s Networking Reception and ASA’s Rising Stars events were held Tuesday evening. The receptions gave attendees the opportunity to meet and network with prominent women across all of ASA’s appraisal disciplines as well as rising professionals in the appraisal industry.
